The Bearded Collie is a herding dog, used to herd sheep and cattle, but these days is generally a family dog. The average size of a Bearded Collie is 20-22 inches in height and 40-60 lbs.

Bearded Collie Dog BreedThe Beardie (as they are often called) has high levels of energy and intensive grooming requirements because of their long hair. Many owners of the breed choose to keep the puppycut style to reduce the grooming requirements.

Their temperament is loving and loyal, which makes a great family pet. Males are more likely to listen to commands and instructions, whereas the females do not like to be told what to do. Whether male or female, Beardies mature at a later age than most dogs. If you are not prepared to have a puppy figure in the house longer than expected, a Beardie may not be the right dog for you.

Beardies are one of Britain’s oldest breeds. They are believed to have originated with the Komondor in Central Europe, but were used to herd animals in Scotland for so long they became known as the Highland Collie. Later the name was changed to Bearded Collie, since they have long facial hair unlike other collies.

The average life of the Bearded Collie is 12-13.4 years depending on location. The main causes for death for Beardies are old age, cancer, cerebral vascular disease, and chronic kidney failure.

The Bearded Collie may not be the most popular breed, but that shouldn’t take anything away from the breed or their owners!
